Overview

The IFMA's Communications Course aims to equip facility managers with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for effective and efficient communication in various professional interactions.

The facility organization requires the support of numerous stakeholders and has an obligation to keep those stakeholders informed.

The process includes collecting feedback from stakeholders, identifying the appropriate audience, planning the appropriate communication, selecting the appropriate delivery method and frequency of the communication, and evaluating the effectiveness of the communication plan.

Course Objectives:

Upon completing the course, participants will be able to: 

  • Craft and deliver appropriate messages for desired outcomes.

  • Prepare and deliver messages to achieve the intended result.

  • Create and manage an FM communication plan.

  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with senior management.

  • Identify and share pertinent information with the relevant audience.

  • Improve positive visibility of the FM function to all stakeholders.

Course Outline

The course covers essential communication areas such as verbal and written communication, active listening, conflict resolution, and delivering challenging messages. The main topics include: 

  • Chapter 1: Business Communication Basics

    • Covers the nature of communication, organizational communication forms, and the communication process. It also discusses communication barriers.

  • Chapter 2: Verbal Communication

    • Focuses on effective speaking and presentation skills.

  • Chapter 3: Written Communication

    • Focuses on different types of business writing.

  • Chapter 4: The FM Communication Plan

    • Explains how to develop and manage a communication strategy for facility management, including using tools like a communications matrix.

  • Chapter 5: Relationship Management

    • Covers engaging stakeholders and managing relationships to influence decision-making across different organizational levels.
