Project management is a core skill in facility management and is particularly important because of the wide range of projects assigned to the facility organization.
Projects can vary in scope, complexity, duration, and financial risk. Leading projects efficiently involves a comprehensive approach that encompasses initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closing. Key objectives include:
Understanding project roles and responsibilities
Identifying and engaging stakeholders
Implementing effective risk management strategies
Delivering outcomes that align with organizational goals
Utilizing core project management processes and models within facility management contexts is essential for achieving success in these endeavors.
The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Project Management training aims to equip facility managers with the specific skills needed to plan, execute, monitor, and close facility-related projects effectively, ensuring they align with organizational goals and are completed within budget and on time.
Training Objectives
Upon completion of the IFMA Project Management course, participants should be able to describe common facility management projects and project management roles, explain the inputs and outputs of the five project phases (initiation, planning, execution, monitoring/controlling, and closure), determine appropriate project lifecycle activities, identify stakeholders and engagement strategies, develop project schedules and resource requirements, establish risk management processes, monitor project progress and outcomes, and formally close contracts and projects.
The IFMA Project Management curriculum follows the standard project lifecycle:
Introduction to Project Management: Covers foundational concepts and the strategic importance of projects.
Initiate Projects: Focuses on defining project scope, objectives, and stakeholders.
Plan Projects: Involves developing project plans, estimating resources, and creating risk management plans.
Acquiring a team and resources, and executing and controlling a project.
Execute, Monitor, and Control Projects: Covers leading teams, managing resources and communication, tracking performance, and managing change.
Accepting deliverables, closing contracts and the project and evaluating outcomes.
Close Projects: Details procedures for accepting deliverables, closing contracts, and evaluating outcomes
